The Art of Abiogenesis
GROUND Solyanka

Anna Kazmina

Humans have always been fascinated by the relationship between the seemingly inanimate and living nature. As a result, various theories emerged that now appear outdated and unscientific. Abiogenesis is a theory of the origin of life from non-living matter. For instance, it was once believed that lambs could sprout from certain trees, and the ancient Greek philosopher Empedocles ascribed the role of bearing eggs to trees. The principle of abiogenesis helps to reveal the essence of modern social development.

Anna Kazmina's project examines issues fundamentally related to the concept of life. Before life emerged on Earth, energy existed, forming the foundation of the world's constant motion. Creativity, in its broadest sense, begins with energy: humans perpetually create forms, and these artificially created elements gradually integrate into life itself, merging the natural and synthetic worlds. Every act of creation in this process is not only an act of making but also of destruction. In the act of destruction, the artist releases the accumulated charge within a material, transforming it into new forms.

The exhibition features porcelain objects. Tableware is an intimately personal item for everyone: teapots, mugs, and plates are used in solitude, among friends, and at formal gatherings. Both the shapes and patterns of these items were once created out of inspiration. However, through the processes of mass production and the passage of time, they have become utilitarian objects with stereotypical designs, stripped of any inherent potential or meaning. Porcelain shatters, and with it, the familiar —deeply embedded in our daily existence — breaks apart. This act reflects the everyday process of living, triggering an explosive effect: what begins on an intimate and personal level expands to something global and universal. Porcelain from any "nationality" or culture can be incorporated into this project; everything is subject to the process of abiogenesis. Paint, in this context, symbolizes the most powerful creative energy — a fundamental law of existence that operates across all levels and scales.
